In The Devil Wears Prada 2, Simone Ashley plays Amari, Miranda Priestly's first assistant at Runway, and Anne Hathaway is back as Priestly. In this scene Amari stands a step behind her boss in the Runway offices, hands folded at her waist. Costume designer Molly Rogers dressed her in sharp black tailoring, and in this frame the wrist holds a small gold watch tucked half under a white shirt cuff, stacked with a beaded gold bracelet and a thin gold bangle.
The watch is a Santos de Cartier, the small model in 18-karat yellow gold, reference WGSA0107. The case is a rounded square, 27 by 34.5 millimeters, with the eight exposed bezel screws that have been the line's signature since the start. The dial is silvered with black Roman numerals and a railroad minute track, the hands are blued steel, and the crown holds a faceted blue stone. For all the gold, it runs on a battery. Cartier lists it at 33,900 dollars on the bracelet, and the jewelry writers who catalogued Amari's wardrobe place it in her stack next to a Love bracelet, a Juste un Clou, and an Écrou.
Louis Cartier built the first Santos in 1904 for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to read the time without taking his hands off the controls of his early aircraft. That is the reason the watch went on a wrist instead of into a pocket. A century later the same design is solid gold, and Amari wears it with her hands clasped, holding a small clutch, standing still.
