By the back half of The Devil Wears Prada 2, the watch on Andy Sachs's wrist is a Bvlgari. Earlier in the film it was a vintage Sharp. Two decades after she walked out on Runway, Andy is back inside the magazine, hired as its features editor by the parent company over Miranda Priestly's objection, so the assistant who once ran for Miranda's coffee now holds a masthead title Miranda never approved. Her clothes have moved with her, out of Chanel this time and into neutrals and layered gold jewelry, with pearls and malachite running through most of her looks.
She wears two Bvlgari Bvlgari in all. The darker is the reference 103897, a black dial under a gold bezel engraved with the brand's name twice, on a black alligator strap. The lighter is steel with a rose gold bezel. Both sit easily on Hathaway, who wears Bvlgari off screen as one of the house's ambassadors.
The design is older than either film. Bvlgari put the Bvlgari Bvlgari into production in 1977 and named it for its own bezel, which engraves the brand's name twice around the dial. The styling is a Roman inheritance. The name rings the dial the way a legend rings the rim of a coin, and Bvlgari sets it in the classical Latin alphabet, a V where the U should be, the same lettering that runs over the company's first store on the Via Condotti in Rome.
