Derol is on the beach when the guests arrive in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), waving a Corona at people who have no idea who he is. He is not a suspect, not staff, not invited; he lives on Miles Bron's island and drifts through Rian Johnson's murder mystery as the one person with no stake in it: at the beach landing, eating cereal among the glass sculptures, holed up in a den hung with Rush posters and tie-dye, offering a passing "Wanna hang out... or?" Noah Segan, a fixture of Johnson's films since Brick (2005), plays him behind a beard, hemp pullovers, and what he described to BAMF Style as drop-crotch parachute pants.
His watch looks like a joke and is anything but. The Haven Chillllton, four L's, is a real chronograph from Haven Watch Co., a Midwest microbrand founded in 2019 by Segan's friend Weston Cutter, who told Hodinkee he wanted to build watches "to be bought by weirdos who make art and do something." Haven's first watch, the Chilton MK1, a manual-winding three-register chronograph, was named after Alex Chilton of the Box Tops and Big Star. The Chillllton keeps the Chilton's Sellita SW510 movement, 37.5mm steel case, and five-piece-link engineer bracelet, and swaps in what Haven calls "the world's only tie-dyed chronograph dial." It was handmade in Minnesota in a run of 25 pieces, and BAMF Style points out the rhyme that made it the right choice: Derol's own den is decorated in tie-dye. Cutter's shop also rebuilt and aged the B-Uhr prop watches Segan wore in Blood Relatives, his own directorial debut, the same year.
Derol wears the Chillllton on his right wrist, where it shares space with a nut-bead bracelet, a puka shell necklace, and a thin red kabbalah string. That string carries the film's quietest costume joke, and Segan spelled it out for BAMF Style: Miles Bron wears the same red string, appropriated and knotted on the wrong wrist. "This tracks with Miles, who comes across as this pedantic know-it-all but doesn't really know anything, appropriating this cultural affectation and screwing it up." Derol wears his correctly, on the left.
