Ruby Rose wears a Seiko Prospex

In The Meg (2018), Jaxx Herd sits beside the oceanographer Suyin Zhang in the lounge of Mana One, hair still wet, tattooed arms folded across her knees, and on her left wrist is a black Seiko on a black strap. Jaxx, played by Ruby Rose, is an engineer aboard the station, an underwater research facility funded by the billionaire Jack Morris. The watch is Seiko's Prospex Solar Military Alarm Chronograph, a 42-millimeter solar-powered piece that retailed for 395 dollars and had already been discontinued by the time the Hollywood Reporter went looking for it.

The Reporter ran a piece on the film's dive watches, and the numbers tell their own story. Jason Statham's Jonas Taylor wears an IWC Aquatimer that the magazine identified as the 50-piece Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month edition at 46,800 dollars, though Time+Tide later corrected the spot to a simpler Aquatimer Chronograph. Li Bingbing, an ambassador for Carl F. Bucherer since 2016, wears the brand's Patravi ScubaTec in steel and rose gold, 9,800 dollars and water-resistant to 500 meters. The 395-dollar Seiko on the engineer is the outlier, and it is the only watch in the film nobody arranged. A Seiko representative told the Reporter that the production never went through the brand and that the placement "seems to be organic." Time+Tide approved, calling it "the safe and watch nerd-endorsed choice of a Seiko solar dive watch."

Jon Turteltaub directed the film, in which a 75-foot megalodon, a shark believed extinct for over two million years, rises from a deeper section of the Mariana Trench that had been hidden beneath a thermocline of hydrogen sulfide. Statham's Taylor is a deep-sea rescue diver brought back to deal with it. The Meg opened on August 10, 2018 and took 529 million dollars worldwide.
