On the Mana One research station in The Meg (2018), Suyin Zhang kneels over her young daughter on a floor of scattered toys, and on her left wrist sits a rose gold and steel dive watch with a blue and black bezel. Li Bingbing plays Suyin, the oceanographer who works with Jason Statham's rescue diver after a deep dive past the floor of the Mariana Trench lets a megalodon loose, and she wears a Carl F. Bucherer in, as the brand itself put it, every scene.
There is no mystery about this placement, because the watchmaker announced it. Carl F. Bucherer, whose global ambassador Li had been since 2016, partnered with the production and exclusively sponsored the film's Beijing premiere on August 2, 2018. Its announcement named the watch, the Patravi ScubaTec, "the perfect companion for her character in the action-packed movie," and Li supplied her own line for the press: "When I look at my Patravi ScubaTec, I always sense a great feeling of accomplishment."
The reference on her wrist is the two-tone version, 00.10632.24.33.01, a 44.6 millimeter chronometer in stainless steel and 18-karat rose gold, water resistant to 500 meters and listed at $9,800. In the frame with her daughter you can check the details yourself: rose gold bezel, blue and black insert, black dial with gold markers. The Hollywood Reporter's watch piece on the film also logged Jason Statham in a $46,800 IWC Aquatimer "50 Years" limited edition and Ruby Rose in a $395 Seiko Prospex solar.
