Kyle Chandler wears an Omega Speedmaster

In a sunlit office in Islamabad, Joseph Bradley stands with his arms crossed and a hand to his chin, thinking. Behind him hang a US flag and a wall of framed certificates and photographs, the decor of a man whose career is measured in postings and commendations. Kyle Chandler plays Bradley, the CIA's Chief of Station in Pakistan in Zero Dark Thirty, and Mark Boal's screenplay introduces him descending the embassy staircase as "a smooth, vain, sophisticated former case officer who hasn't quite buffed all the blood out of his fingernails." He is the institution in a striped dress shirt.

At the cuff of his raised left arm is a steel watch on a steel bracelet, and the record reads it as an Omega Speedmaster Professional. The dial never turns fully to camera, so the Omega name and the chronograph registers stay just out of focus, but the silhouette fits: a steel chronograph on a flat-link bracelet, the kind of watch a government salary can carry without apology. The Speedmaster has been in production since 1957 and went to the moon on Apollo 11 in 1969, a manual-wind chronograph respectable enough for NASA and conventional enough for a bureau chief. It is the most expensive watch on screen in a film where the field operators make do with cheap digital tool watches.

That contrast is the whole reading. Bradley does not kick in doors. He manages, and he argues, most memorably with Maya, the analyst played by Jessica Chastain, when she presses her bin Laden lead. He tells her he cares about stopping the next attack, not chasing one man; she tells him he only wants to check a box on his resume, and warns he could become the first station chief "called before a congressional committee" for obstructing the hunt. The one serious mechanical watch in the movie rides the wrist of the man who never leaves the office, while the people doing the fieldwork wear watches you could replace at a drugstore.
