Chris Pratt plays Justin Lenihan, a member of the SEAL Team Six element that raids the Abbottabad compound in Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. To prepare, Pratt shadowed a real SEAL, Jared Shaw. In a camp scene before the operation he is in a tank top and a shemagh, pitching horseshoes, with a blacked-out digital watch on his wrist.
The watch reads as a Suunto Core, the outdoor ABC watch that packs an altimeter, a barometer and a compass into a round black case. It is a credible choice: Navy special-warfare units did buy Suunto Cores, and the military-watch site Watches of Espionage points out that the Core's depth gauge tops out at 33 feet, the same as the maximum working depth of the LAR V oxygen rebreather SEALs dive with. W.O.E. files that under coincidence, but it is the kind of detail that made the watch a genuine favorite in that world.
The catch is that nobody has pinned down the exact watch on Pratt's wrist. The Suunto Core is an informed read from the blacked-out ABC watch the operators wear and the units' real buying habits, not a documented identification, and the film keeps the dial moving and out of focus. On this evidence it is a likely Suunto Core rather than a certain one.
