Zero Dark Thirty (2012) is Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal's account of the decade-long CIA hunt for Osama bin Laden, culminating in the May 2011 SEAL raid on the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Joel Edgerton plays Patrick Grayston, the squadron commander who leads the assault team through the night raid. The character is drawn from the DEVGRU operators who conducted the mission. Bigelow worked closely with military advisors throughout production, and the equipment in the film reflects what operators actually carry.
The watch on Grayston's wrist has a round dark case consistent with a Suunto Core. The Core is a Finnish outdoor watch built around ABC functions: altimeter, barometer, and compass in a single unit, water resistant to 30 meters. The all-black variant eliminates reflective surfaces and needs no active light source to provide field data, which aligns with every other equipment choice in this film. Both of those properties matter on a night raid.
The round case separates it visually from the Casio G-Shock, the other watch most commonly associated with tactical and special operations use. Both are inexpensive, both are durable, and both have appeared in the kits of special operations personnel. But they solve different problems. The G-Shock was built for shock resistance. The Suunto Core was built to replace standalone navigation instruments in the field.
