Late in Rawson Marshall Thurber's We're the Millers, the fake family is braced inside a careening RV, Jennifer Aniston's Rose O'Reilly clutching a yellow bundle in the passenger seat while Jason Sudeikis fights the wheel. This is the run-up to the gag the whole sequence has been loading, the stowaway tarantula about to find Will Poulter's Kenny. Rose, a Denver stripper drafted to play a suburban mom for a cross-border drug run, has spent the film performing wholesome normalcy, and the costume department dressed her wrist to match.
On her hand is a small women's dress watch: a gold-tone square case, a dark dial with Roman numerals, a mottled brown tortoiseshell strap with gold links and a jewelry clasp. It has the look of an Anne Klein, the American fashion label whose watches are made under license and sold at department-store prices, the opposite of anything Rose would have seen on a client at the club. The watch is chosen to be forgettable, which is the joke of the whole movie in miniature. Everything about the Millers is a costume, right down to the watch that is meant to slide past you.
