Everything in The Taking of Pelham 123 runs against a clock. A hijacker who calls himself Ryder has seized a downtown subway train and given the city one hour to deliver ten million dollars, and through the afternoon he keeps glancing at his own watch and reading the minutes back over the radio. Thirty-nine left. Twenty-eight. At 3:08, in the thick of it, the Mayor of New York checks the time too. James Gandolfini plays him, brought into the crisis as the city races to put the ransom together before the hour is gone.
The watch on the Mayor's wrist is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Réserve de Marche. In close-up the case is steel, the dial silver, the strap dark leather, and the Jaeger-LeCoultre name reads plainly across the top. Its one complication sits in a small fan-shaped gauge at the upper left: the réserve de marche, French for power reserve, a meter that tracks how much wound running time the movement has left before it stops.
