David Denman wears a Suunto Core All Black

On the night of September 11, 2012, a six-man team of CIA security contractors fought to defend the American diplomatic compound and the nearby CIA annex in Benghazi. Michael Bay's 13 Hours (2016) is their story. David Denman plays Dave "Boon" Benton, a retired Marine Scout Sniper, and the watch on his wrist is a Suunto Core All Black, the matte version of the Finnish brand's ABC watch: altimeter, barometer, and compass in one case.

Suunto introduced the Core in 2007. Its predecessor, the Vector, was, as Watches of Espionage puts it, "a mountaineering watch for REI nerds that grew to become a military favorite," and the Core followed the same route out of the mountains and into the field. Air Force Special Operations Command and USSOCOM placed repeated orders for it starting in 2010, and one Watches of Espionage reader recalls being issued a Core All Black across two tours in Afghanistan. By 2012, the year the film depicts, it was already standard kit for real special-operations units.

Boon's watch has never been pinned down in print. The watch writing that followed 13 Hours fixed on James Badge Dale's Rolex Submariner and John Krasinski's Casio G-Shock, and left the rest of the team's wrists alone.
