Alex Garland's Civil War (2024) was A24's most expensive film at the time, a fifty-million-dollar war movie about four journalists driving toward a Washington under siege. The conflict has scrambled the usual map: the president is in a third term, the FBI is gone, and California and Texas have joined forces against him. Cailee Spaeny plays Jessie Cullen, the youngest of the group, an aspiring photographer who shoots on an old Nikon film camera and attaches herself to Kirsten Dunst's veteran.
