Colonel Stuart gets one of the stranger watch introductions in Die Hard 2, which is saying something because this is a movie where almost everyone is operating at maximum 1990. William Sadler is doing tai chi in a hotel room, wearing basically nothing but a ring and a TAG Heuer, and the watch somehow does not feel accidental. It is part of the uniform before the uniform appears.
Stuart is the ex-Special Forces colonel trying to take over Washington Dulles during Christmas week, freeing General Ramon Esperanza while McClane is stuck in the airport trying to pick up Holly. The whole plan depends on clocks, radios, timing, and people doing exactly what they are supposed to do at exactly the right second. So, naturally, the watch matters.
The watch is identified by The Clock Wiki as a TAG Heuer 2000 Chronograph Professional. In the close-up, the cream dial shows three registers, the TAG Heuer shield, and the line "professional 200 meters." The 2000 Series was a practical sports-watch line, but here it gets used almost like military equipment. Stuart checks his, his men check theirs, and the operation moves on schedule.
I like that contrast with McClane's TAG Heuer in the same movie. McClane's watch is battered and worn inward, almost like he doesn't want to think about it. Stuart's watch is part of the plan. Clean, synchronized, controlled.
Of course, the plan fails.
