Tom Cruise wears a Casio DW-290

Before the franchise became a showcase for luxury watches and impossible stunts, Ethan Hunt wore a Casio. Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible (1996) treated espionage as a paranoid thriller rather than an action spectacle, and Tom Cruise's Hunt spends most of the film off the grid, betrayed by his own agency, operating without resources and improvising with whatever he can get. The famous CIA vault heist is conducted in near-silence with a team of mercenaries he barely trusts. It is the most grounded the series ever was.

The Casio DW-290-1V on Hunt's wrist fits that version of the character. It is a rugged digital watch with 200 meters of water resistance, a stopwatch, an Illuminator backlight, and a black case ringed in red around the display, the kind of functional tool a field operative would buy at a PX or pick up in any city in the world. It is not glamorous. It tells the time, and it survives being slammed into things. In 1996, Hunt was a spy doing his own dirty work with imperfect equipment, and the Casio reflects that.
