Tom Arnold wears a Casio Flip Top

James Cameron's True Lies (1994) is an action film disguised as a marriage comedy, or maybe the reverse. Schwarzenegger plays a spy whose wife believes he sells computers. Tom Arnold plays Albert Gibson, his partner at the fictional Omega Sector and the comic relief who talks too much during surveillance.

Gibson's watch is a Casio flip-top, the gadget on the gadget man. He is the one running plates and monitoring comms while Schwarzenegger does the physical work, and the watch suits the role. When Prop Store auctioned the screen-used piece, it described a prop the production built to resemble a real Casio flip-top, customized so the cover opens to reveal an LCD screen and a keypad: a spy tool dressed up as a consumer calculator watch. Cameron has always been exacting about props, down to the full-scale Harrier jets in this film, and the Casio sits in his usual sweet spot between plausibly useful and slightly absurd.
