At a Miami Beach café, Tony Montana and Manny Ribera lean over fruit cocktails and talk business, both already dressed like men who have arrived. In Scarface (1983), written by Oliver Stone and directed by Brian De Palma, Steven Bauer plays Manny, the partner and best friend who rises alongside Tony from Mariel boatlift refugee to the top of the Miami cocaine trade. Bauer, born Esteban Echevarría in Havana, was the only Cuban-born actor among the film's leads.
On Manny's wrist is a Rolex Day-Date. Rolex introduced the Day-Date in 1956 as the first wristwatch to spell out the day of the week in full alongside the date, and the model picked up its "President" nickname from its bracelet and from the American presidents who wore it. Watch writers have identified Manny's as a yellow-gold example on the President bracelet, and a round watch on a metal bracelet sits plainly on his wrist in the beachside scene with Tony.
