Sarah Paulson wears a Rolex Datejust

In the subway shot that became Ocean's Eight's signature image, all eight women ride the same car, and Sarah Paulson's Tammy sits at the end of the bench in a grey windowpane coat with a steel watch bracelet showing at her left cuff. The French watch site Montres de Luxe identified the watch as a 36-millimeter steel Rolex Datejust on an Oyster bracelet. Nobody else has tried: Hodinkee's write-up on the film went to Cate Blanchett's IWC Mark XVIII and to Sandra Bullock wearing Danny Ocean's old watch, and the costume coverage of Tammy stops at her Prada gown for the Met Gala. One French call and a bracelet glimpse, on a model in production since 1945 whose steel versions are everywhere: the identification is plausible and single-sourced.

Tammy is the crew's fence, a suburban mother moving stolen goods out of her garage until Debbie Ocean, Danny's sister, pulls her back in, and she later gets herself hired at Vogue to work the Met Gala from the inside. Gary Ross directed and co-wrote the film, with Sandra Bullock's Debbie assembling the eight-woman crew, Blanchett, Hathaway, Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina and Paulson among them, to steal a necklace off a movie star's neck mid-gala.

That necklace has the best backstory in the film. Jacques Cartier built the original in 1931 for the Maharaja of Nawanagar, and the house later attached the name of Jeanne Toussaint, its longtime creative director, to the design. The original no longer exists, so Cartier's high-jewelry workshop on the rue de la Paix rebuilt it for the production in under eight weeks, downsizing a piece designed for a man until it fit Anne Hathaway, and setting zirconium oxides into white gold in place of diamonds no film budget would cover. On screen it is worth 150 million dollars. Cartier served as the film's exclusive jewelry partner, with its watches and high jewelry scattered across the cast.
