Cate Blanchett wears an IWC Pilot's Watches

Gary Ross directed Ocean's Eight (2018) as a spinoff of the Soderbergh trilogy, with Sandra Bullock's Debbie Ocean assembling an all-female crew to steal a $150 million Cartier necklace during the Met Gala. Cate Blanchett plays Lou Miller, Debbie's partner and the crew's operational backbone. She runs a nightclub, dresses like a rock star, and handles logistics while Debbie handles strategy. Hodinkee identifies the watch on Lou's wrist as a stainless-steel IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII, reference IW327015, on IWC's steel bracelet (which features a micro-adjustment in the clasp that Danny Milton specifically calls underrated). It is 40mm of simple, legible classic watch design that descends from the Mark XI IWC built for the British Royal Air Force in 1948. The design has not really changed in three quarters of a century: black dial, white Arabic numerals, a triangle at twelve flanked by two dots, sword hands, a simple date window at three. The Mark XVIII is the modern version of an instrument that started life as a navigator's tool.

On Lou Miller, surrounded by her flamboyant clothing, the Pilot's Watch reads as the one accessory she chose for function rather than fashion. It tells time. Everything else she wears tells a story. The contrast is the point: Lou is the practical one in the partnership, and her watch is the proof.
