In the bar scene in Iron Man 2, the reporter Christine Everhart corners Tony Stark and his rival Justin Hammer for a quote, and Stark, in a blue suit and tinted glasses, waves a finger and talks over both of them. Robert Downey Jr. plays him. The watch on his wrist is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, the rectangular watch with a case that flips over on itself.
The Reverso has a story most watches do not. Jaeger-LeCoultre built it in 1931 for polo players in British India who kept shattering their crystals mid-match, giving it a case that slides and turns to hide the glass against the wrist. It became one of the defining Art Deco designs and has been in production ever since. Writing as the film came out, aBlogtoWatch went through Stark's Iron Man 2 watches and called this one a Reverso Grande, relaying that Jaeger-LeCoultre itself named it the Reverso Grande 985.
It is the third Jaeger-LeCoultre on Stark across the film. Bulgari had dressed his wrist in the first Iron Man, but by the sequel Jaeger-LeCoultre had taken over, and the production used it freely: the AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT he wears most, the Master Grand Tourbillon he hands a fruit vendor for a carton of strawberries, and this Reverso in the bar. The rectangular case and pale dial read clearly in the still, even if the frame is not sharp enough to pin the exact variant.
