In Iron Man 2 there is a small, strange moment at a roadside fruit stand. Tony Stark pulls up in his white Audi R8, and instead of paying for a carton of strawberries, he hands the vendor the watch off his wrist. Robert Downey Jr. plays Stark in Jon Favreau's 2010 sequel, in which he is slowly dying from the palladium core that keeps him alive, while a Russian physicist named Ivan Vanko, played by Mickey Rourke, builds the weapons to finish the job. The still here catches the trade: the strawberry crates, the vendor with a heart-marked box, Stark reaching up with the watch.
The watch is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grand Tourbillon, and that is the joke in the trade. It is a six-figure gold dress watch with a tourbillon, the rotating cage that turns the escapement to average out the pull of gravity on the balance, a complication that takes a watchmaker months to build and adjust. Stark gives it away for fruit.
The first film had been Bulgari's; Stark wore the brand's Diagono through 2008. By the sequel the sponsor had changed. Writing as Iron Man 2 opened, aBlogtoWatch said it plainly: "Iron Man 1 was all about Bulgari... Now, two years later Bulgari (Bvlgari) is out, and Jaeger-LeCoultre is in." Stark wears several JLCs across the film, an AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT in the courtroom scene and a Reverso among them, but the one in this shot is the Master Grand Tourbillon.
