Josh McGuire resents his father, which is standard for a seventeen-year-old in a survival thriller, but Rhys Wakefield plays it with enough specificity to sell the dynamic. He is not just sulking. He genuinely does not want to be in a cave in Papua New Guinea with a man who chose diving over his family. Alister Grierson's Sanctum (2011) puts them underground together when a cyclone floods the Esa-ala cave entrance, and the film becomes a survival story where the father-son tension has nowhere to go but forward. Ioan Gruffudd plays Carl, the expedition's financier, who panics when the situation turns lethal, leaving Josh caught between a father who is too hard and a rich man who is too soft.
The featured image shows Roxburgh and Wakefield side by side in their dive gear, but Josh's watch is not clearly visible. It hasn't been identified.
