Ralph Fiennes plays M in Spectre, Sam Mendes' 2015 Bond film, the fourth with Daniel Craig. Fiennes took the job over from Judi Dench after Skyfall, and his M spends as much time fighting Whitehall as fighting Spectre. On his wrist is a Longines Conquest Heritage in rose gold, reference L1.611.8.78.4: a 35mm dress watch with a sunray silver dial, pink gold markers, and a date at twelve o'clock. We know the exact watch because it was auctioned. After filming, the screen-worn piece went to Christie's "James Bond Spectre" sale as Lot 3, estimated at £5,000 to £7,000, and sold for £20,000, the money going to Doctors Without Borders.
It is a quiet choice for the head of MI6. Hodinkee, covering the sale, wrote that M's field days are behind him, so he wears "a dressy Longines in rose gold," though one that "did not forget functionality," with a date and a luminous hand "to check deadlines in the dark." Longines is the older house, founded in 1832, but in the modern Swiss hierarchy it sits a step below Omega, the brand on Bond's own wrist.
