Victoria Ratliff spends much of The White Lotus seated, a drink within reach and a gold Rolex riding on her wrist, watching her family through a lorazepam haze. The watch is a Day-Date, the model collectors call the President. Parker Posey plays Victoria, matriarch of the Ratliff family in the show's third season, which unfolds at a resort in Thailand. Her husband Timothy (Jason Isaacs) spends the trip hiding a lawsuit serious enough to take the money away.
The gold Day-Date suits what Victoria believes about herself. Rolex has made it in nothing but gold or platinum since 1956, so there is no steel version to buy at any price. It reads as money inherited rather than money earned. Prop master Michael Cory told GQ the meaning runs deeper than the finished cut shows. An extended version of the tsunami dream that opens the third episode put the same watch on Victoria's father, and by Cory's account it was Posey's own idea that the Day-Date had been handed down from him. Timothy wears the identical model, which, in Cory's words, "plays into the family dynamics."
So the watch says the wealth is old and inherited, the kind that was there before Victoria and will outlast her. The season is the argument against it. She wears the proof that her family has always had money while her husband works out how to tell her, or how to avoid telling her, that they may not have it much longer.
