Meghann Fahy wears a Cartier Tank

Daphne Sullivan spends the Sicily trip playing the wife who does not worry about anything, and Meghann Fahy plays her so well that it takes most of the season to see how much Daphne actually notices. She is Cameron's wife, the picture of a well-kept marriage, and the watch on her wrist completes the picture: a Cartier Tank Louis Cartier in yellow gold on a brown alligator strap.

The Tank is one of the oldest designs in watchmaking still in production. Louis Cartier drew it in 1917, its flat vertical case sides said to echo the tracks of a Renault tank on the Western Front, and Cartier began selling it in 1919. The Louis Cartier version is the dress refinement of that shape, with Roman numerals, a rail-track minute ring, blued hands, and a sapphire set into the crown. It costs around fourteen thousand dollars, which by the standard of the watches around this resort counts as restrained.

That restraint is the point. Daphne's Tank is the watch of a woman taught that real status never raises its voice, the same lesson she applies to her marriage. She keeps her own counsel and lets Cameron do the shouting, right up until she reminds Harper that not needing to know everything can be its own kind of power.
