Matt Damon wears a Luminox Navy SEAL

Deep in the vault sequence of Ocean's Eleven, in matching black tactical gear and fingerless gloves, Danny Ocean glances down at his wrist to check the time while Linus Caldwell hovers at his shoulder, learning how it is done. Matt Damon plays Linus, the youngest man on the crew, a Chicago pickpocket Rusty Ryan recruits, who spends the whole film a half-step behind people who have been doing this for decades. By the end he has earned his place. During the heist he is dressed exactly like the rest of them, down to the watch.

The watch is a Luminox Navy SEAL, the all-black resin diver the team wears as standard kit for the break-in, with white numerals on a black dial and a black rotating bezel. Luminox built its name on one trick: tiny tritium gas tubes set into the hands and markers that glow on their own for years with no charging, so the watch stays readable in total darkness. The US Navy SEALs took them on in the early 1990s, which is where the model gets its name, and the look is pure function, cheap and tough and legible with no shine to catch a light. For a crew moving through a blacked-out vault against a clock, it is the right tool, and Soderbergh puts the same one on every wrist.
