Matt Damon wears an IWC Portugieser

In the casino lounge of Ocean's Thirteen, under pink venue light, Matt Damon's Linus Caldwell leans toward Ellen Barkin's Abigail Sponder with a champagne flute in hand. He is not quite playing Linus here. He is playing Lenny Pepperidge, the alias Linus adopts for the job, complete with a prosthetic nose and a borrowed swagger, working Sponder so the crew can rig the casino floor. Steven Soderbergh directed the 2007 film, in which Danny Ocean's crew sets out to ruin casino owner Willy Bank for double-crossing their friend Reuben Tishkoff, and Damon returns as the youngest member of the team, still the one most eager to prove he belongs.

On the wrist holding the glass sits a round white-dial chronograph on a brown leather strap, its sub-dials stacked along the dial's vertical axis, the look of an IWC Portugieser Chronograph. That is the reference 3714, the approachable automatic chronograph IWC introduced in 1998 below the split-seconds 3712, a clean 40.9mm dial with a running-seconds register and a chronograph-minutes register that ran nearly unchanged for close to two decades. The Portugieser line goes back to 1939, when two Portuguese merchants asked IWC for a wristwatch accurate enough to rival a marine chronometer, which is why the family has always worn that oversized, railroad-track face. Linus is a man in disguise, a fake nose and a fake name. The one honest object on him is the watch.
