Rusty Ryan wears two watches in Ocean's Thirteen, and the one most people miss belongs to the half of the film where he is in disguise. For the casino-vault con he becomes "Rusty the Scientist," a seismologist with long blonde hair, wire-rimmed glasses, and a scruffy beard, and on that wrist is not the gold Rolex he wears in his suits but a custom piece built by Red Monkey Designs in Los Angeles. Brad Pitt had worked with the shop once before, on a black-leather, white-dialled Gentleman's Classic he wore in The Mexican in 2001, and for Ocean's Thirteen he came back wanting something heavier. What the maker built was a Citizen quartz chronograph in a 46mm black-plated stainless steel case under a mineral crystal, mounted on a hand-built brown leather band about two and five-eighths inches wide, and fitted with a vintage watch face Pitt supplied himself. By the shop's own account it became a favorite in his personal collection, and he made sure to feature it on his character. That is the small joke buried in the costume. The Rolex is the watch Rusty Ryan would own; the Red Monkey is the watch Brad Pitt actually wears, slipped into the scenes where the camera is meant to be looking at the wig and not the wrist.
