In Shane Black's The Nice Guys, the smog and sleaze of 1977 Los Angeles mostly plays for laughs, until John Boy turns up. Matt Bomer plays him as the cold professional the conspiracy hires when it needs the job done right, the polite killer who's scarier than every thug that bumbling PI Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired muscle Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) keep tripping over.
Look at how he's dressed to kill. Crouched behind a bar with his pistol up, he's in a dark suit, black leather gloves, and cufflinks set with a blue stone. At the cuff, just above the glove, sits a steel watch on a fine steel bracelet with a pale dial, small and neat, the watch of a man who dresses to blend into money.
What is it? I can't tell you. The frame is dim and the case won't give up a name, and no source has ever pinned John Boy's watch. So I'll leave it open. If you can read a steel dress watch off this still, the comments are yours.
