The Speidel Twist-O-Flex, that stretchy expanding band you tugged over your knuckles without ever working a clasp, went on sale in 1959 and, after a run of early television ads, ended up on wrists everywhere. One of them is Ryan Gosling's. In The Nice Guys he plays Holland March, a 1977 Los Angeles private eye and widowed single dad, and the watch sliding out from under his cuff sits on exactly that gold Twist-O-Flex stretch bracelet: a plain gold dress piece, light dial, no numbers. So what does the world's worst detective wear? I cannot read the dial cleanly enough here to name a maker, but the sleuths at BAMF Style narrow it to a likely Jules Jürgensen, an old watch name gone cheap and American by the 1970s - about the least pretentious thing you could strap on a guy like March. Recognize it, or think they have it wrong? Tell me in the comments.
