Shane Black's The Nice Guys (2016) is a neo-noir buddy comedy set in a smoggy, sun-bleached 1977 Los Angeles. Russell Crowe plays Jackson Healy, an enforcer who beats people up for a living, opposite Ryan Gosling's hapless private detective Holland March. The film opens on Healy's morning: he wakes and reaches for his watch on the nightstand, which is the closest the camera ever gets to it.
The watch is an Omega Speedmaster Professional, the hand-wound chronograph NASA flew to the moon, but Healy wears his the way a working man wears a watch he has owned for years: on a cheap twist-o-flex stretch bracelet, the mass-market kind, rather than the steel bracelet Omega fits. The dial never holds still long enough for the camera, so the exact reference stays unsettled, but the case is unmistakable. It is the moon watch demoted to a daily beater, which suits a man whose work is closer to plumbing than to spaceflight.
