Early in Murder Mystery 2, the 2023 Netflix sequel, Connor Miller stands on a tropical beach in a black wetsuit and a loaded plate carrier, a steel dive watch on his wrist, sizing up the two amateurs in front of him like a problem he has already solved. Mark Strong plays Miller, a former MI6 hostage negotiator brought in the morning after the Maharajah Vikram is taken from his own wedding and carried off the island by boat. Nick and Audrey Spitz, the married private detectives the film follows, had just seen Vik's bodyguard fall dead from a wedding elephant. Miller is the professional. They are the help.
The watch is a working diver and not much else the frame will name. Steel case, black dial, a dark rotating bezel, round dots of lume for the hour markers, a steel bracelet throwing the bright sun back hard enough to wash any name off the dial. The brand cannot be read. It suits the costume exactly: Miller has dressed as the man who fixes this, in a wetsuit and a loaded vest with a diver's watch built for water he has apparently just walked out of, and the outfit argues his case before he says a word.
Miller is not there to find the Maharajah. He took him, the 70-million-dollar ransom is his, and the team of experts is cover. He runs the Spitzes ragged across Paris, fakes his own death by sealing himself in a bomb-proof titanium chamber built into his car, then turns up for the last fight at Le Jules Verne, the restaurant on the Eiffel Tower's second floor. He loses. Audrey and Nick lash his harness to the tower's elevator machinery and drop him into the rotor of his own getaway helicopter, which explodes and goes down into the Seine.
