On August 5, 2010, the San Jose copper-gold mine in Chile's Atacama Desert collapsed, trapping 33 men 700 meters underground. They survived 69 days before rescue. Patricia Riggen's The 33 (2015) dramatizes the ordeal with an ensemble cast that includes Antonio Banderas, Juliette Binoche, and Lou Diamond Phillips as shift foreman Luis Urzua, known as Don Lucho. Urzua was the most experienced miner in the group and the last man lifted to the surface — he refused to leave before everyone else was out.
Phillips wears a round-faced watch on his left wrist throughout, visible here as he stands in the underground workspace in a hard hat, utility vest, and the look of a man who knows this mine should have been shut down years ago. The watch hasn't been identified. For a shift foreman working hundreds of meters below ground, any watch on his wrist would be a tool — something to track the hours of a shift in a place where there is no daylight to mark the time.
