Andre Sougarret was the man Chile called when 33 miners were trapped 700 meters underground and every initial rescue attempt failed. Gabriel Byrne plays him in Patricia Riggen's The 33 (2015) as a calm, methodical engineer who arrives at the San Jose mine carrying clipboards and plans while families camp outside the perimeter waiting for news. The real Sougarret led the team that drilled the rescue shaft after Plans A and C both failed, and brought all 33 men to the surface alive.
In this image, Byrne stands at the mine site in a hard hat and utility vest labeled "Andre Sougarret L. / Gerente de Minas," speaking into a walkie-talkie. A watch is visible on his left wrist — steel, with what appears to be a light-colored dial — but it hasn't been identified. For the man running a rescue operation in the Atacama Desert, checking the time would have been a constant habit. The drilling ran around the clock.
