Kelly McGillis wears a Cartier Panthère de Cartier

Charlie Blackwood's watch isn't the kind of thing Top Gun stops to point at. Kelly McGillis plays the civilian Top Gun instructor in Tony Scott's 1986 original, opposite Tom Cruise. Charlie objects to Maverick's tactics against the MiG-28 in the briefing room, develops a romance with him over the course of the film, and is wearing a yellow gold Cartier Panthère the whole time. It takes a freeze-frame to see it.

The Panthère de Cartier launched in 1983, three years before Top Gun. Square case, rounded corners, articulated gold bracelet that flexes flat against the back of the wrist. The panther had been Cartier's signature animal since longtime creative director Jeanne Toussaint built her work around the cat in the 1930s. By the time the watch arrived, the motif had been a Cartier staple for half a century.
