John Wick (2014) is the one where a retired hitman comes out of grief and back into killing because Russian gangsters take his car and kill the puppy his dead wife left him. Chad Stahelski, a former stuntman directing his first feature, made it with Keanu Reeves in the title role. Wick is the kind of legend other criminals whisper about; one of them remembers him killing three men in a bar with a pencil.

Wick wears his watch on the inside of his left wrist, dial against the pulse. Stahelski has said that was deliberate: worn that way, the crystal is protected when Wick throws a punch, and the face does not catch the light and give him away. It is how some soldiers wear a watch in the field.

The watch is a Carl F. Bucherer Manero AutoDate, a 38mm steel dress watch: white dial, dauphine hands, a date at three, and a sapphire caseback over the automatic CFB 1965 movement. Its presence is no accident: Stahelski has been a Carl F. Bucherer ambassador since 2014, and the brand turns up across the whole series.
