Donnie Azoff is the first man to buy what Jordan Belfort is selling. Jonah Hill plays him in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street as a children's-furniture salesman who takes one look at Belfort's vintage Jaguar and his paycheck and quits his job that day to join him. Together they turn Stratton Oakmont into a boiler room that unloads worthless stock on anyone who picks up the phone, and as the money lands, the gold arrives with it. On Azoff's wrist through the firm's fat years is a yellow-gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with a black dial, the Zenith-era reference watch-spotters peg as the 16528.

Except it is not a Rolex. Hodinkee put the question to the film's prop master, Robert Griffon, who said the people who clocked a gold Daytona had it wrong: as in many Hollywood productions, Azoff's watch was a replica. Hodinkee thought the fake suited the character, a man it called a bit of a poseur. Years later, the screen-worn fakes turned up at Propstore, catalogued plainly as Donnie Azoff's faux Rolex and sold alongside his sunglasses and his wedding ring.

A real gold Daytona was worth more than most of the stock Stratton Oakmont sold. The one Hill wore only had to look the part, which was more or less the firm's whole business model.
