Jessica Alba wears an Omega Speedmaster

Some objects outlive the people who carried them, and a father's watch is one of them. A mechanical watch gets wound, gets worn, and one day gets handed to someone else. Mechanic: Resurrection (2016), Dennis Gansel's sequel, builds one small, sentimental scene out of exactly that.

Jason Statham plays Arthur Bishop, an assassin who dresses his kills up as accidents, retired and in hiding until an old enemy named Crain abducts Gina, the woman he has fallen for, to force him back to work. So before the first kill, a man who owns exactly one irreplaceable thing gives it away. He hands Gina the watch he never takes off: it was his father's, he tells her, the only memory he has left of him, so keep it safe until he comes back. Gina is Jessica Alba. The watch is an Omega Speedmaster Professional.

Of all the things to leave with someone, he chose well. The Speedmaster is the Moonwatch, the manual-wind steel chronograph NASA flight-qualified on March 1, 1965, after thermal, vacuum, and shock tests that broke the other watches on the bench. Buzz Aldrin wore his on the lunar surface in 1969; Neil Armstrong left his inside the lunar module, pressed into service as the cabin's backup clock after its electronic timer failed. So the first watch worn on the moon rode the wrist of the second man to walk there. It keeps time only as long as someone winds it, the kind of watch that gets handed down.

Which is the trouble. Crain had known Bishop since they were boys and never once saw him take the watch off, so the moment he spots it on Gina's wrist, he knows. "I wasn't sure there was anything in the world that could break Arthur," he tells her, "until I saw you wearing his watch." Once the job starts Bishop straps on an IWC Aquatimer, and his father's Speedmaster stays on Gina's wrist.
