Jason Statham collects watches, and he is the kind of collector who brings his own to a film set. In The Fate of the Furious, Deckard Shaw spends most of the movie in the black ceramic Panerai. In one scene he wears something else, something that belongs to Statham himself: a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Extreme W-Alarm, the Valentino Rossi edition. He has worn the same watch off-screen, including on the cover of Men's Health.

The Master Compressor Extreme W-Alarm is one of the largest watches Jaeger-LeCoultre has built, 46.3 millimeters across, cased in a mix of titanium and steel, with the compression-key crowns that give the line its name. It tells world time and sounds a mechanical alarm. This version was made for Valentino Rossi, the motorcycle world champion, in a run of 946 pieces, the number 46 borrowed from his racing plate, his signature yellow streaked across a black dial.

There is a neat logic the movie never bothers to mention. The Fast and Furious films run on engines and speed, Rossi is one of the fastest men ever to ride a motorcycle, and the watch is his tribute. Statham owns it and wore it into the role. The film makes nothing of the connection. It is just the watch he had on that day.
