Jared Leto disappeared into Paolo Gucci: bald cap, prosthetics, a mustache, the carnation in the lapel he wears in the ensemble portrait on this record. In Ridley Scott's House of Gucci (2021), Paolo is Aldo's son, the family member who wanted to be a designer and never got the family's blessing, and who eventually tipped the authorities to his own father's tax evasion. The watch press noticed that he is one of the few characters in the film who actually wears a Gucci: a vintage gold watch with the house's red and green web stripe across the dial, a quartz piece he wears through the whole film. Watchonista pegged it as "probably a 3001m model"; Oracle Time logged "a large gold number with brand's signature red and green stripes."

The real Paolo had a stranger claim on those stripes than the film has time for. He is credited with creating Gucci's interlocking double-G logo, and after the family forced him out he spent the 1980s in a New York courtroom fighting over his own name; the 1988 ruling in Gucci v. Gucci let him identify himself as the designer of products sold under other marks, but barred him from using Gucci alone, or the double-G he had drawn. His independent line, which came to include handbags, scarves, and watches, ran until 1995, when he died broke, the same year Maurizio Gucci was shot on the steps of his Milan office.
