Danny Sharp aims a pistol straight down the lens, a red-dot sight between the audience and his eye, and on the supporting wrist a gold dial flares in the dark. Jake Gyllenhaal plays him in Michael Bay's Ambulance, a career criminal who talks his ex-soldier brother Will, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, into a bank robbery that collapses into a day-long ambulance chase across Los Angeles. Gyllenhaal plays Danny at a constant sprint, a man who keeps performing even when the plan is on fire.
The watch is the loudest thing he wears: a gold dial in a steel case on a black strap, the sort of vintage chronograph that turns up at estate sales. The people who catalogue movie watches describe two pushers and three subdials and guess at a Valjoux 72 movement, the workhorse chronograph caliber of the mid-century. Nobody has named the brand. Watch-ID lists it and openly asks readers for help, and a Reddit thread wonders whether it is a real watch from a defunct maker or a prop built for the shoot.
So it stays unidentified, which is a strange fate for a watch the film puts on camera this clearly. What can be said for certain is small: gold dial, steel case, black strap, on the wrist of a man pointing a gun at you.
