In Mr. & Mrs. Smith, John Smith stands in a forest in olive fatigues, a pistol held low at his hip and a steel dive watch on the wrist just above it, black bezel and dark dial on a grey nylon strap. Jane is next to him in the same gear. Donald Glover plays John and Maya Erskine plays Jane, two strangers a faceless agency pairs off, hands the cover of a married couple named Smith, and sends out on contracts they complete or die trying.
The watch is a tool diver, brushed steel with crown guards and a black rotating bezel. By the watches the production gave him, it reads as John's Rolex Submariner, the only steel diver in his rotation and, by Bob's Watches' count, the one he is already wearing in the first episodes while the money is still tight. Madeline Weeks, the former GQ fashion director who dressed the series, gave John the watch habit on purpose, and has named the 1970s thrillers she worked from, Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor and Al Pacino in Serpico.
So the watches keep score. Each finished contract buys the next one, and across the season John climbs through an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711, a Rolex Daytona, the two-tone GMT-Master he wears on brown leather. The Submariner sits at the bottom of that ladder. It is the one he straps to a few dollars of nylon and takes into the woods.
