Donald Glover wears an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

In the farmer's market scene, John Smith turns up in track pants and a shirt left half open and crosses paths with another couple in the same line of work. On his wrist is an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the steel sports watch Gérald Genta drew for Audemars Piguet in 1971 and the company put on sale in 1972: a 39mm three-part case, an octagonal bezel held by eight exposed screws, and the fine Tapisserie pattern across the dial. Donald Glover plays John, one of two strangers handed a fake marriage as cover for their work as mercenaries.

The watches were chosen by costume designer Madeline Weeks, a former GQ fashion director, who built John into a collector. "He loves nice things, but he's not a snob," she told GQ. "Every time he does a mission, we were thinking that John might go shopping." So John shops. Across the series he rotates through Rolex sport pieces: a Daytona, a Submariner, two GMT-Master IIs in the Root Beer and Pepsi colorways, a Rolex carrying an unauthorized Snoopy dial, an Omega on a custom leather strap, and a Patek Philippe Nautilus.

"Each Rolex that he wears, you can't even get those watches," Weeks said, which sends a man paid to leave no trace into the world in objects a collector could name across a room. Jane, his fake wife, wears one watch for the entire series. Weeks gave her a Cartier Tank and never changed it, because, in her words, "she doesn't need a new watch."
