In Mr. & Mrs. Smith, John Smith stands beside Jane in an ivory turtleneck flecked with blood, a steel watch on a thick brown leather strap at his wrist. Donald Glover plays John, a stranger paired with Maya Erskine's Jane in a fake marriage and a job working as assassins for an agency they never meet. The series, created by Glover and Francesca Sloane and released by Prime Video in 2024, dresses him as a man who buys himself something nice after a mission.
The watch is an Omega on a custom leather band. It is the piece the show's costume designer, Madeline Weeks, paired with this ivory sweater, and by her account it is one of her favorites in the series. Weeks, a former fashion director at GQ, built John as a collector who keeps it quiet. He owns Rolex sport models a buyer cannot simply walk in and get, a Daytona, a Submariner, a Root Beer and a Pepsi GMT-Master II, even one with Snoopy painted on the dial. The Omega is the watch that steps outside the Rolex rotation, a steel case on worn leather that a passing glance reads as nothing in particular.
That is the use of it. John's work depends on not being clocked, and Weeks chose for him watches that are crazy expensive and carry no diamonds, the sort another collector recognizes across a room and no one else notices. Jane, next to him in the frame, wears one watch through the whole series, a Cartier Tank, because by Weeks's account she is not a watch person and does not need a second. John's wrist is the one that changes with the job.
