John and Jane Smith are not really married. The marriage is the cover, assigned by the agency that pays them, and the house and the shared name are part of the assignment. Donald Glover plays John, and the show's costume designer, Madeline Weeks, dressed him as a man who answers a finished job with a purchase. "He loves nice things, but he's not a snob," she told GQ. "Every time he does a mission, we were thinking that John might go shopping."
One of the things he buys is a Patek Philippe Nautilus. Gérald Genta drew it in 1976, a steel luxury watch with a case shaped like a ship's porthole and a bracelet built straight into the lugs. Weeks said she wanted watches that were "crazy expensive, but not flashy, no diamonds or anything," pieces that could move between John's two lives, the husband at home and the operative on the job, without telegraphing what they cost. She gave him an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak for the same reason, the sports watch Genta had drawn four years earlier, and sent him out to a farmers market in it.
Weeks chose the Nautilus as a watch nobody was meant to notice. In the years around the show's making, the plain steel version, reference 5711, became the most chased watch in the market, waitlisted for years and reselling at several times its retail price before Patek discontinued it in 2021.
