Mr. & Mrs. Smith keeps finding John Smith's wrist. Donald Glover plays him as one half of a pair of aimless thirty-somethings who get recruited into a shadowy spy agency and handed a Manhattan town house and a closet of luxury to fit their new cover. The upgrade reads most clearly on his arm, where the show rotates through a different expensive watch nearly every time it looks. One of them is a Patek Philippe chronograph in rose gold.
The collection was put together by Madeline Weeks, the series' costume designer and a former GQ fashion director, who picked pieces that, as GQ put it, were not flashy but covetable and crazy expensive. John leans hardest on Rolex sport models: a Daytona, a Submariner, two-tone GMT-Master IIs in both the 'Pepsi' and 'Root Beer' bezels, and a custom Snoopy dial that surfaces for a moment in episode seven. He reaches past Rolex too, to an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak worn to a farmer's market over track pants and a sports-chic Patek Philippe Nautilus. The rose-gold chronograph is the dressiest piece in that group, the most formal complication on a wrist that otherwise favors sport watches.
The point of Weeks's choices is that almost none of it announces itself as money. 'Each Rolex that he wears, you can't even get those watches,' she told GQ, the kind of value legible only to people who already know what they are looking at, which suits a man whose work depends on not being looked at. Jane gets the opposite treatment. Weeks put Maya Erskine in one watch for the entire series, a Cartier Tank, on the reasoning that someone who does not care about watches has no need for a second.
