At the resort breakfast table in the third season of The White Lotus, Laurie is the one who watches. Carrie Coon plays her as the quiet one of three old friends reunited for a week in Thailand, and across the season she spends much of it listening and measuring herself against the other two. She wears a Cartier Baignoire, the small oval dress watch the show's costumers chose for the only one of the three who works a desk job.
The Baignoire is a watch you read by its shape rather than a logo. The case is a stretched oval, and the word baignoire is French for bathtub, which is what the form is meant to call to mind. The shape is older than the name: by Cartier's own account the company did not formally call the watch the Baignoire until 1973. Esquire identified Coon's as the Mini, the smallest size, and priced it at 11,800 dollars.
That number is the tell. The same magazine counted the rest of the resort's wrists, from Sritala's Jacob and Co. at roughly 700,000 dollars to the Ratliff parents in matching Rolex Day-Dates at 76,900 each. Laurie, the working one of the three, wears a watch that costs less than half the 25,180 dollars Esquire put on her friend Jaclyn's Hermès.
