In the art-museum scene of American Hustle, Bradley Cooper's Richie DiMaso stands beside Irving Rosenfeld with his arms folded, a slim round watch with a plain pale dial on his wrist. It looks like a Skagen 233XLSS, the ultra-thin Danish quartz the brand built its name on.
If that is what it is, it is the wrong watch for the year. American Hustle is set in 1978, and Skagen Designs did not exist until 1989, which puts the watch at least a decade out of period. Richie is not the only offender. Louis C.K.'s Stoddard Thorsen wears a gold ceramic Rolex GMT-Master II that Rolex did not release until 2005, and Cooper's own celebration-scene watch is a late-2000s IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar. The film dressed its FBI agents almost entirely out of period.
