American Hustle opens with Christian Bale gluing down an elaborate comb-over, and the cons barely let up after that. Everyone in it is performing someone they aren't. Amy Adams plays Sydney Prosser, a hustler who reinvents herself as a posh Englishwoman, Lady Edith, to run a long con beside Bale's Irving until an FBI agent pulls them both into a sting. David O. Russell set it in the late 1970s, loosely on the real Abscam scandal.
So what watch do you put on a woman performing wealth and class she doesn't have? Something that photographs like gold. Sydney wears a small rectangular cocktail watch with a brown dial on an ornate gold link bracelet, and the dial reads Varsales - a quartz brand almost nobody has heard of, gold-tone and styled to pass for fine jewelry. Propstore sold the actual screen-used one in 2018, with a certificate of authenticity, and noted that it no longer runs. I like that the prop is running its own little con: a no-name watch dressed up to play rich, worn by a character doing exactly the same thing.
