Three of the commandos in Predator (1987) wear matching Waltham XX011 military watches. The prop department gave them identical wrists. Schwarzenegger got his own Seiko. John McTiernan directed this one, a year before he made Die Hard, and the cast reads like an action movie draft pick: Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, Sonny Landham, and Shane Black, who was there partly to do uncredited script work and partly because McTiernan liked having a writer on set he could kill off early.
The Seiko H558-5000 on Schwarzenegger's wrist is the same analog-digital hybrid he wore in Commando two years earlier. Chunky case, analog hands over a digital readout, alarm, chronograph, and depth gauge all in one. Seiko built this watch for the kind of person who wanted everything on one wrist. Major Dutch Schaefer, leading a rescue team into a Central American jungle where something is hunting them, fits that brief. The watch looks exactly like a tool.
Schwarzenegger was in the middle of his Seiko run at this point: the H558-5000 in Commando (1985), Raw Deal (1986), and here in Predator. Three consecutive mid-80s action films, three Seiko hybrids. Collectors named the watch after him. The Casio and Panerai years came later.
