Vincent Cassel wears a Louis Vuitton Tambour

On a terrace above Lake Como, in the Villa Erba scene of Ocean's Twelve, Francois Toulour stands in white linen with one hand resting on a terracotta bust and the other on his hip, talking down to Danny Ocean. George Clooney plays Ocean in a dark suit and sunglasses, the gracious loser of a bet he does not yet know he has lost. Vincent Cassel plays Toulour, the gentleman thief who calls himself the Night Fox and would rather win on style than on money. The watch sits on his left wrist, just above a brown belt, a steel case on a tan leather strap, turned slightly so the dial never quite faces the camera.

It is a Louis Vuitton Tambour, the watch the fashion house used to crash the Swiss party in 2002. The name is French for drum, and the case earns it, a single block of steel sculpted wider at the base than at the dial, sloping in toward the bezel. The signature hides in plain sight, the words LOUIS VUITTON spelled one letter at a time around the middle of the case, twelve letters for twelve hours. That is the small joke of this sighting. A Tambour announces itself by ringing its own name around the case, and the one angle we get tilts the watch just far enough to keep those letters out of focus. A French house, on a French actor, playing a French thief who insists taste is the only currency that counts. Toulour would approve of the coordination.
